Acupuncture for chronic back pain: what the research shows

· 6 min read

Persistent low back pain rarely comes from a single structure. Muscles guard, fascia thickens, and the nervous system becomes more sensitive over time. Effective care has to address all three layers.

Large pooled analyses of acupuncture trials have found meaningful improvement in pain and function compared with usual care, with benefits that persist for months after treatment ends. That durability is why several national guidelines now list it among non-pharmacologic first-line options.

In clinic we combine local needling of tight paraspinal and gluteal tissue with distal points that modulate the pain response, often adding gentle electrical stimulation or cupping when the tissue is stiff.

Progress is tracked, not guessed. We re-measure range of motion and a simple function score every fourth visit so you can see whether the plan is working.
